AGUS SUWAGE
b/ Central Java, Indonesia, 1959
Agus Suwage is a contemporary Indonesian artist known for his self-representation in painting, sculpture, and installation. He uses his self-portraiture to probe questions about society, culture, religion, and man’s relationship to animals in critical yet humorous ways. There exists a convenience for the artist when using his own likeness in a work, Suwage has explained, noting that “self-portraits are ‘the easiest’ because the model is ready anytime the artist requires him to be.”
