WIDI WARDANI’S WORK IN ARTOTEL
Widi Wardani, a young artist from Bandung born in 1998, completed his art studies at the Indonesia University of Education and pursued his master’s degree at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology. Starting in 2019, Widi’s career as an artist took off as he created murals, participated in group exhibitions, and held his first solo exhibition at the Orbital Gallery in Bandung. Currently, his focus lies in creating paintings that reflect his experiences exploring the city.
In his works, Widi Wardani explores the theme of urban travel, presenting visual notes of what he observes in his surroundings. In the modern habit where many people prioritize time efficiency and speed in city travel, Widi responds by inviting people to look deeper. He sees city travel as an opportunity for exploration, exercise, demonstration, or other activities. This perspective aligns with Rebecca Solnit’s thoughts, emphasizing that cities always offer anonymity, variation, and intersections that can be discovered through exploration.
Widi Wardani paints not only to record his experiences but also to respond to and celebrate aspects of the city often overlooked. Without being a critical activist, he provides a sharp view of urban areas, highlighting elements that might be considered negative by others. By letting these things exist in his artwork, Widi creates a visual record that encourages us to consider the beauty of the city from a different perspective. His works also reflect his sensitivity to social change and organic interactions in the modern city.
This time, one series of works about urban life by Widi Wardani is currently being exhibited at Artotel Bandung. The exhibition titled “Jajar Wanci” takes place from January 11th to February 29th, 2024.
